Background
The Programme has been developed to provide students with an outstanding postgraduate experience in the field of English Language and Literature. MA English Language and Literature offers a varied and distinctive range of areas of study, including contemporary literary studies, critical and cultural theory, gender, memory, trauma, and postcolonial studies.
Justification
IST’s Master of Education (MEd) in English Literature is the only postgraduate Programme in Singapore designed to meet the professional needs of teachers of Literature in English. Students will undertake advanced studies in the theory and practice of literary education, informed by critical perspectives contextualized within the realities and possibilities of actual classroom practice.
The programme features a range of courses pertinent to the professional demands of English language and literature education in Burkina Faso an contexts, and will encourage students to build on their academic knowledge and teaching experience towards an advanced degree that is at once professionally relevant and intellectually rewarding.

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognized bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies. Bachelor’s in Education and other related Science and Technology fields.It is a requirement that the bachelor’s degree be in education or the natural and physical sciences, with no more than 25 per cent of subjects failed.
General Objectives
The aim of the programme is to offer students the opportunity to examine literary, theoretical and critical texts of a variety of genres and periods, from different cultural contexts, fostering advanced skills of comprehension, interpretation and analysis.
Specific Objectives
At the end of this programs students will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced skills in critical engagement with the historical and theoretical frameworks;
- Recognize the artistry and utility of the English language through the study of literature;
- conduct research focusing on literary and cultural texts of different historical periods, cultural contexts, and genres;
- Demonstrate intellectual flexibility, creativity, and cultural literacy in formulating cohesive and persuasive arguments;
- Illustrate an appropriate level of expertise in literary history, literary theory, and rhetoric theory;
- employ effectively the language of the discipline;
- demonstrate knowledge of literary terms, major periods, authors, genres and theories.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of primary literary texts and a familiarity with
the culture, genre, and historical context they belong to; - Account for the role of context in the production, reception, and transmission of literary and cultural texts across historical periods, geographic or national spaces, and cultural differences;
- Identify and critically engage with the major theoretical schools and modes of discourse in the field
- Apply a variety of approaches of theoretical schools and modes of discourse to the reading and analysis of a variety of texts;
- Interpret and evaluate critical ideas, values, and themes that appear in literary and cultural texts and understand the way they inform and impact culture and society;
- Demonstrate mastery of the discipline as regards the development and current practices of literary studies and rhetoric;
- Describe different approaches to culture, nationalism, multiculturalism, migration, gender and race in the context of postcolonial societies;
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of selected approaches and theories in the field of gender studies;
- Analyze the ways in which gender and sexuality organize social structures, cultural practices and identity;
- Read and write critically to a high level of proficiency;
- Illustrate creativity through expanding their creative boundaries and demonstrate a unique writing voice.
Duration of the Programme:
This course is offered on a Two-year (Four semesters), full-time or online basis for students with a UTS-recognized bachelor’s degree in Education s or the natural and physical sciences.
