Title of the Programme
The programme shall be master of engineering in bridges and highway engineering MEng. (BHE)
Background
Our bridges and highway engineering MEng is the only MSc programme in this area in Africa and one of the very few around the world, with the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in specialist aspects of bridge engineering. You’ll be taught by passionate academics with exceptional expertise in bridge-related research and practice, alongside guest lecturers from industry within the field of bridge engineering and management. This course will help you pursue an exciting career as a bridge engineer with a consultancy, specialist contractor or local authority.
Justification
The programme shall be master of engineering in bridges and highway engineering is a two-year post-graduate program. Highway Engineering is the national leader in providing temporary and permanent roadway traffic safety solutions. The course concentrates on techniques of planning and design of roads, bridges and drainage based on traffic and ecological studies. The student is also exposed to construction & management of highways, pavements, preventive and remedial measures of pavement failures, newer technologies in Highway design as well as lying. Highway Engineering, Inc. offers traffic safety services and equipment for the road repair, construction, and maintenance industry. The course includes a variety of concepts that utilize computers, telecommunications equipment, and control systems to improve vehicle performance and/or guideway operation and control. Advanced highway technologies may contribute to the management of such problems as congestion in the highway and air transportation systems, infrastructure deterioration, petroleum dependence, air pollution, and safety concerns.
The targeted group includes holders of:
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognized bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies. A minimum of 50 per cent in Burkinafaso honours degree in Civil Engineering (or other related Engineering subjects), or equivalent recognised international degree. Applicants will be considered on an individual basis, based on strength in specific subjects related to the MEng programme and/or professional experience.
General Objectives
During the studies, students acquire in-depth knowledge about road pavement construction, bridge nonlinear analysis, road network planning theory, as well as methods of complex road analyses and determination of risk and safety factors in bridge engineering.
Specific Objectives
This course covers a wide range of modules which address the whole life-analysis of bridges from design through to end-of-life. You’ll also have a choice of optional modules from the areas of:
- Structural engineering
- Geotechnical engineering
- Water/environmental engineering
- Construction management
- Infrastructure engineering and management.
During your studies, you’ll have the chance to visit a bridge site on a field trip (subject to availability), allowing you to experience how your knowledge can be applied outside of the classroom.
